Emergency Relief Program
On August 4 2020, Beirut Port was hit with a devastating explosion.
The blast wave levelled buildings near the port and caused extensive damage over much of the rest of the capital, which is home to two million people. Hospitals were quickly overwhelmed.
The tragedy has resulted in around 200 dead so far and 5,000 injured. More than 300,000 people have been displaced from their homes. According to UNICEF, 100,000 of those are children.
In these exceptionally hard times, our children are having a hard time dealing with the trauma. Click here for Afel’s guide on how parents should deal with traumatized children. Afel is providing FREE psycho-social support to traumatized children and their families. Call Afel Hotline on to book a free appointment with a psycho-therapist.
Afel continues to shelter and care for abused children. Click here to learn more about how you can help or donate here directly.

- Schooling & Boarding:
194 in its centers as follows:
– 40 children were welcomed in Jouar boarding house: these children are mistreated and abused by their families and staying at home represents a threat to their development, if not their life. At Jouar, they benefit from full psychological and educational support.
– 15 of those children attended a specialized remedial school* at Jouar el Baouchek.
– 74 children were sent to a specialized remedial school* at Burj Hammoud.
– 80 children benefitted from after-school support and a daily meal at Sin El Fil center which focuses on preventing delinquency and child labor.
Caring for the children’s families and community to ensure the children get the needed support at home and in their community.
- Scholarship support:
163 children received financial aid and psychological and social support at home.
- Social counseling:
145 children who had a brother or sister in our centers were assisted and followed up on by a social worker and psychologist, all year long.
* Both remedial schools at Jouar and Burj Hammoud are accredited by the government and provide a specialized educational, psychological, and relational follow-up as well as speech therapy to children unable to pursue the classic school program. They are also the only schools in Lebanon free of charge.
